LSE Africa Summit 2021

Maxine was part of the organising team for the LSE Africa Summit 2021. The theme was The Global Crisis: A Catalyst for Change. Maxine was part of the Speakers and Content Team, sourcing speakers, facilitating their participation and discussing their content with them.

Get Clued Up On Decolonising, LSBSU

Maxine delivered a tailored talk for London South Bank Students' Union to explore the histories and practicalities of decolonising higher education institutions. She explored some of the key thinkers who have provided guidance on what decolonising means, before covering some practical steps that universities and students can take to start the process!

Times Higher Education (Nov 2020)

Maxine participated in a panel discussion for Times Higher Education Live, on the theme ‘What Does Good Learning and Teaching Have to Do With Decolonising?’ Other panellists included senior managers of King’s College London and London Southbank University, as well as the Chief Executive of the Association for Commonwealth Universities.

Goldsmiths, University of London (Feb 2020)

For this event Maxine spoke alongside the prestigious Dame Baroness Helena Kennedy and Pragna Patel of Southall Black Sisters. The event, entitled ‘The Arc of Advocacy’, explored the experiences of women in the British justice system, with some ideas of what reform ideas are necessary.

Westminster Briefings (Jan 2020 and Nov 2019)

Maxine led the session on Closing the Attainment Gap: Getting Senior Leadership Buy-in, as part of the event Improving BAME Student Outcomes. This session was delivered in Maxine’s capacity as Co-President Democracy and Education at SOAS Students’ Union.

Universities UK (Jun 2019, Oct 2019)

Maxine has spoken twice for Universities UK. The first event was the BAME Attainment Gap: Learning From Student Experiences conference. This followed the publication of the NUS x UUK Racial Attainment Gap report. Secondly, Maxine spoke at the Tackling Racial Harassment conference, following the Equality and Human Rights Commission report on under reporting of racial harassment in Higher Education Institutions.

Educational Achievements

MSc International Social and Public Policy, LSE

Maxine recently graduated from a MSc in International Social and Public Policy at the LSE. Her performance led to her winning two Titmuss Prizes: for Best Performance and Outstanding Dissertation. The course encompassed theories of ideas and values underpinning policy; as well as quantitative and qualitative research methods.

First Class Honours. Maxine’s Law Degree was deliberately interdisciplinary. Notable modules included: Mind, Culture and Psychiatry (Anthropology Department); Black Urban Studies (University of New York); Fictions of History (Literature Department; Law of Global Commodities; and Law, Multiculturalism and Rights.
